Hungary main small game species is the Pheasant, Brown Hare and the Wild Duck. You can find this species all over Hungary.
PHEASANT (PHASIANUS COLCHICUS)
Pheasants were introduced to Europe in the middle ages and since then it spread almost all across the continent. It is the most common feathered game today. Several subspecies were introduced to Hungary which cross-bred and a hybrid called” hunting-pheasant” evolved.
They prefer flat or mildly hilly areas. Their optimal habitat is a land with diverse arboreal vegetation, where appropriate feeding, breeding, and hiding places are present.
Brown hare (Lepus europaeus)
It can be found everywhere in Hungary, where are plain fields. The best hare grounds are in the South and East of Hungary. Their hunt is probably the most tiresome among small game species since they can only be hunted on driven hunts successfully. On these people often have to walk several kilometres in the plough to succeed.
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
Hungary is a real paradise for the fans of waterfowls hunting due to its very favourable conditions. Only the mallard can be hunted from the family of wild-ducks.
Hunting bred mallards are also very popular. At the hunt of these ducks, there is no daily limit.
The hunting season for mallards at the end of summer and at the beginning of fall can be beautifully combined with pigeon hunts and later with the hunt for pheasant and other small game.
